that bases the work of teaching (ethos)

“From enowning,” Emad and May translate ‘Ereignis’ in their monumental project of translating Beiträge zur Philosophie: vom Ereignis. From Heidegger’s enowning of his Work, that is “translated” into “contributions” to the academic ethos—though the endeavor was annuled by unforeseeable times (i.e., war), thus not published.

Translator Hofstadter settled on “event of appropriation” in PLT, which became normal translation. That eventing there pertains to texts brought into teaching, rather than Heidegger’s own Event—teaching through discursive readings that Heidegger-in-English exhibits.

Yet Ereignis is implicitly the condition of the creative working (Work) that finally gives way to presenting itself (the text, the lecture).

The working odyssey (Work of poiesis) that leads to the presentable work (of conceptuality: logos)—call it art?—is appropriated as the tangible work-for-audience. Having been set forth through its odyssey (Work), the tangible work (at last: final manuscript) is set up for the eventing (ethos to be advanced) between “us”: mediated interplay that “we” work out together.

So, Ereignis is heuristically threefold: [a] Event (Working—poiesis) toward [b] the tangible work (logos of its genre) and [c] working event (communicating the work in thinking together—ethos advanced), thereby appropriating the work with-and-for others’ odysseys of their “ownmost potentiality for being” (Being and Time).

That [c] eventing between “us” is different from the Event [a] that leads to the tangible work [b], “from enowning” the Working’s odyssey. The “origin of the work,” as twofold Event ([a]—> [b]), is enowned in the tangible work [b], yet that work is then brought (evented) into [c] the “vessel” of textuality between “us.”
